One of the things you've probably heard me say a million times is that Subeta is old. The site itself is old, but the code is a series of pieces of code held together by years of duct tape and spit. Many people have contributed to this over the years, which causes even further confusion.

One of the biggest things that comes from that is the inability to upgrade to the newest version of PHP when it comes out. PHP 7 launched more than a year ago and is a huge improvement over previous versions, cutting the amount of time taken to process complicated tasks (like shading hair and merging images and then building the avatars) by more than 50%. We haven't been able to take advantage of improvements like that... until now!

Due to the excellent work has done to upgrade our filter system, and a lot of other under the hood improvements over the last year, we've just made the transition to PHP 7. Yay! 🎉 This means a few things for Subeta

1. We can provide more servers that require significantly less power, which means server transactions much, much faster. Subeta has always been on the slower side (and a lot of this is from a million CSS and JS files, see comment above about duct tape), but this will help us get the server side of things almost as fast as they possible can.
2. It unlocks a lot of new programming features. Classes themselves weren't made real until PHP 5.3, and in PHP 7 they've been given a lot more power. This will allow us to write less code and better features. The new API system we've built uses some of these features, and will be able to be more solid when we upgrade the version on it.

Overall, this is a huge back-end change that should only result in you seeing the site a little faster. 👋

There may have been, and there still may be bumps with site stability in the future but I am really proud of staff for sticking with it and keeping up the hard work to try to get everything working smoothly. I can't imagine it's an easy task-- I remember mentioning years ago that it was too big of a task to outsource in one go when people were begging for a kickstarter to 'fix the site'. and I'm just really thankful that you guys aren't giving up, even with a small team and so many of us over here at times being impatient boogerlings (myself included, I get super salty when the start of an event lags or if it lags when I'm doing quests lol)

I understand about... half of this. And what I don't understand, I get the general idea of. Always wanted to learn to program and whatnot. It's what my older brother does for a living. But it just eludes me.
